Monday: Bible 411-Beginnigs
To begin our weeks study of “Bible 411”, it is necessary to say a few fundamental things about it's origins and composition. The Bible consists of 66 books arranged in two testaments. The Old Testament contains books that deal with the beginning of the universe and man, the life of many of the Patriarchs (Noah, Abraham, etc.), the giving of the Mosaic (Jewish) law, and all of the prophecies concerning the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. The New Testament contains the birth, life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It also contains letters written by the Apostles to the early church. These letters outline many things including how a Christian is supposed to live.
The Bible was written by around 40 different men over a period of 1,500 years. The last book, Revelations, written by the Apostle John, was completed in 96 A.D. Even though it was written by a wide variety of people and in 3 different languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek), the Bible is clear in purpose, thought, and its message never contradicts itself. No other document available to man can boast this and this attribute speaks to the Divine Inspiration of the Bible.
2 Timothy 3:16- “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” The Bible is God’s word, spoken to you. It can teach you, discipline you, correct you, and train you to live the way God wants you to.
James 4:8a- ‘Come near to God and He will come near to you. Sometimes you might not feel very close to God. He sometimes seems so far away. You may sometimes wonder where He is and why he doesn’t just speak to you. The reality is that He is near. You just need to make a move towards Him.
2 Peter 1:21-“For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit A fundamental truth for you to realize is that although the Bible was written down by human hands, the content is solely God’s thoughts for you.
So what does this mean to you? Have you changed your view on what the Bible is all about? It is not just a bunch of ancient stories, long outdated. It is not fiction. It is not some old guys guess about how God wants people to live. It is God’s voice, speaking to you. Try to remember that in the days, weeks, months, and years to come.
Prayer Time:
Spend a few moments thanking God for His word, the Bible. Ask Him to help you understand it. Ask Him to help you apply what it says to your own life.
